Project summary The aim of this project was to develop and promote mechanisms and strategies to facilitate the uptake of new knowledge with respect to alternative natural resource based livelihood strategies as developed by R8135. The project focused on developing, field testing, validating and implementing a well defined communication strategy based on stakeholder analyses.
Background Demand for research into alternative NR based livelihood strategies in the Caribbean was expressed during a regional workshop in Barbados in 1999. A previous NRSP project, R8135 ('Feasibility of alternative resource-based enhanced livelihood strategies') examined this issue, including acces by the poor to resources. R8325 builds on the experience of this project.
Purpose The purpose of the project was the development, validation and promotion of mechanisms for the implementation of integrated pro-poor natural resource management which supports traditional as well as alternative livelihoods in the coastal zones of the Caribbean.

Outputs Development and implementation of mechanisms for the uptake promotion of the products of R8135, including refined products of case studies of good practice, by all stakeholders at local, regional and international levels.
Validation, adaptation, improvement and dissemination of alternative livelihood strategies.
Engagement with policy makers to stimulate product uptake.
Development and implementation of a framework for monitoring and evaluation of the uptake promotion of R8135 products.

Achievements The project developed a variety of uptake promotion products which were validated and promoted across the region to a wider Caribbean audience, including policy makers and implementers, civil society organisations and regional institutions.
Policies to promote collaboration among target intermediaries were adopted by those organisations that participated in specific project activities.
