Socio-Economic Methodologies (SEM) Programme: 1995 - 2000 Best Practice Guidelines.

Authors

These guides are written for natural resources researchers and are funded through the Department for International Development's Renewable Natural Resources Research Strategy (RNRRS).  NRSP was contracted to collate and publish electronic versions for CD ROM so that the guidelines could reach a wider audience.  They are designed to meet the needs of Programme Managers, Production System Leaders and project leaders for readily accessible information on social science methods used in field-based natural resources projects.  A secondary audience comprises those with specific natural resources sector research interests in DFID's bilaterally funded projects, and in other organizations.

The overall aim is to inform research practice in order to focus outputs towards developmental objectives and, hence, to improve the relevance of natural resources research to target beneficiaries.  Each Guide provides a brief synthesis of current research on specific social science methods, with an emphasis on practical aspects of applying such approaches in a natural resources context.

All 12 guides are listed below and can be downloaded.  Each guide has a main text of around 4000 words and contains: An introduction, a synthesis of recent and current research in the area, a summary of the practical implications of the methodology, a concluding section which may highlight areas of methodology still to be resolved and/or where future research is likely which may produce new insights, and finally a list of suggested reading.
